Many of us, particularly frequent flyers notice we become ill with the common cold a few days following a commercial flight. Although flying is a wonderfully fast and safe way to travel, it is an unfortunate fact that commercial aircraft are formidable carriers of the common cold. A recent study, published in the JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH shows that you are more than 100 times more likely to catch a cold while flying commercially than while going about your daily routine. More ominously, transmission rates of tuberculosis are increased during commercial flights.

These facts seem to be the result of four conditions.
1) Large numbers of people are seated in a relatively small space and some of them may be ill, resulting in increased numbers of germs in the air we breathe.
2) The very dry air of high altitude wrecks havoc with the membranes lining our nose and throat, which ordinarily protect us from invading germs.
3) There are not only increased numbers of germs in the air we breathe, but also large numbers residing on many of the surfaces we might touch, such as arm rests and door handles. It is a short and not infrequent trip from hand to mouth. It is said that this is the most common route of transmission of the cold.
4) In our busy lives many of us neglect paying adequate attention to our diets or to supplements such as vitamins. This may result in an immune system functioning below par, thereby rendering us more susceptible to invading germs.
